Urban Pollution - How to plan for the Future of Urban Environments
Brisbane is growing at a significant rate and we need to plan and prepare for its urban future to ensure environmental sustainability and liveability is maintained. Brisbane is a thriving multicultural hub forecast with massive growth. This huge amount of growth creates a lot of important environmental problems that have to be dealt with. With major global warming and environmental destruction occurring, Brisbane needs to lead the way in eco-friendly transport to achieve our goals of a sustainable Brisbane by 2050.
Brisbane is urbanizing at an incredible rate it is the 3rd largest urban center in Australia and is set to grow to 4.8 million people by 2050. These Landsat images show the urbanization of Brisbane from 1972 to 1988. People are pushed and pulled to cities like Brisbane because of many factors, people are pushed to cities because of unemployment, lack of infrastructure and a lack of education or healthcare services. People are pulled to cities because of job opportunities, better social life, more opportunities, action and adventure and the city culture.
It is clear Brisbane is expanding at a significant rate and efforts from the governments by decentralizing, urban renewal and suburbanization are trying to control this surge in growth. All of this growth creates massive environmental problems with the world facing a massive global warming crisis people want environmentally friendly cities and with the projected growth for Brisbane we need to do exactly that.

There are many ways that Brisbane can be ecofriendly. One of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions is transport. Today there are over 1.3 billion cars on the road and the BBC predicts that there will be 3 billion in 2050. Brisbane has 1.2 million cars on the road with 86% of households owning one or more cars. With each car on average emitting six tones of Co2 annually this will create huge amounts of pollution. We need to ditch the great gas guzzling machine and go clean green into the future.
Admit it. We all need to get around, today’s world wouldn’t exist if there was no transport however the current transport methods are inefficient, congested and hard on the environment. Hydrogen Fuel cell vehicles are leading the way in eco-friendly and efficient transport. Unlike combustion engines hydrogen fuel cells turn hydrogen directly into electricity allowing them to create zero emissions. Hydrogen can be used to fuel cars, trucks, trains, boats, ships and yes, even airplanes. Hydrogen fuel cells work by removing electrons from the hydrogen atom, the electrons are then converted directly into electricity. After this chemical reaction occurs the remaining atoms are then combined with oxygen to form water and heat. Another benefit with this technology is that it would allow combustion engine vehicles to be easily converted to hydrogen power. It would allow companies to modify existing transport vehicles rather than buying new ones saving them big bucks. This new technology has a lot of potential in the market and especially in Brisbane.
Hydrogen fuel cells will allow the people of Brisbane to live sustainable lives. Hydrogen power will not only allow cars to be ecofriendly but will allow for more efficiency as well. A fuel cell is 3 times more efficient than gasoline combustion engines allowing a car running on hydrogen to drive 580 km nonstop. In my opinion this new technology is amazing, to create zero emission cars that can travel a marathon running 580km the future is definitely here. If this technology is widely available in Brisbane it would have a huge impact on Brisbane’s emissions and would reduce the smog in the city caused by vehicle emissions. With improvements in sustainability in energy generation and industrial production sectors Brisbane could be one of the cleanest cities in the world. It would allow the people of Brisbane to enjoy a sustainable life knowing that the next generation would be able to enjoy Brisbane the same way they did. Wouldn’t you like to live in an environmentally friendly city? What difference would it make to your life? This new technology would have a huge positive impact on Brisbane and its people.
Brisbane is urbanizing fast however this rapid urbanization has its drawbacks some major changes have to be made to ensure we preserve the environment for future generations to enjoy. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are leading the way in eco-friendly and efficient transport and will drastically reduce Brisbane’s emissions. If we plan for Brisbane’s future now then we can build a sustainable Brisbane tomorrow. If this technology is available in cities then as the wall street journal stated ‘cities can be part of the environmental solution rather than the problem’.
