OPVL source evaluations broken down
Origin:
This primary source was created by Jacob Clifford and Adriene Hill two experts who work in the field of Economics. The video was created in 2015 and published on YouTube as educational content for the popular channel Crash Course. Jacob Clifford one of the writers and co-hosts is an entrepreneur and teacher who has a degree from the University of Delaware for economics. Adriene Hill has a bachelor’s degree in political science and economics from Amherst College and a master’s degree for political science from Northwestern University.
Purpose:
The purpose of this video would be to provide educational content for the YouTube community while doing this earning revenue through ads for the company crash course and for co-hosts (Hill and Clifford). The content would also be created to help college, university and high school students learn economics. The authors of this video have no specific perspective rather present both sides
Value:
This source was very useful to me it gave me a basic understanding of how globalisation is affecting people around the world and it also provided me with factors and effects I didn’t think about. The information in this source has been reviewed by some sources and the facts stated corroborate through my reading of other texts of the same information like other globalisation videos from crash course, and many reputable sources like the world bank.
Limitations:
The source is very reliable and doesn’t seem bias towards anyone, group or class. The source is limited by the fact that it doesn’t provide a lot of specific examples of how globalisation affects certain people rather explains the concepts and theories of globalisation in a general way.
Source 2 :
Origin: This primary source was created by Panos Mourdoukoutas an economist and writer for the Forbes magazine. The source was created in September 2011 and published on the Forbes / markets website. Mourdoukoutas possesses a PhD in economics from Stony Brook University and is an assistant professor for the university of Pennsylvania and currently writes reports for Forbes/ market.
Purpose:
The purpose of this source would be to provide economic content to the markets branch of Forbes. Mourdoukoutas would also earn money from the posts he makes as Forbes would pay him for contributing to their site. The purpose of this post of Forbes would be that they would earn money from ads on their site and also promoted books and additional services and products offered by Forbes. Mourdoukoutas shows that there are many sides to globalisation ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’ he is trying to give all the sides of the story to the people and this purpose is clear.
Value: This source was very useful to me in two main ways firstly it provided me with differing views on the topic of globalisation and shows how it affects different people and groups of people. It also illustrates the scale, efficiency and speed of the global economy and how globalisation has influenced that. The information presented is reliable and trustworthy as the facts in the source corroborate through my reading of other texts of the same information like boundless.com and Amnesty international.
Limitations: the source seems very reliable and doesn’t see bias towards anyone. The source is limited by its lack of detail and its lack of examples which it only provides three (for one side). The source also doesn’t have much technical information, images and graphs.
Source 3
Origin: This primary source was created by Jagdish Bhagwati an experienced economist and writer. The source was published in 2007 and since then has gained a lot of recognition. He has two bachelors or arts for economics from Bombay University and Cambridge University he also holds a PhD in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Bhagwati has won countless awards including Award of the Indian Chamber of Commerce, Seidman Award in International Political Economy and even the Nobel prize for economics.
Purpose: the purpose of this book would have been to share his point of view that globalization and free trade have allowed to world to develop, reduce poverty, allowed people to get richer and more. He would have wanted people to see his point of view and he also wanted people to not take globalization for granted and appreciate it rather than wish it never happened and this purpose is very clear.
Value: This source is very useful to me, it showed me a lot of the benefits of globalisation and how it affects people worldwide. It also gave me another perspective regarding globalisation on human rights, poverty and gender equality, this perspective I never looked at. The facts are also very reliable as they corroborate with other sources of the same information such as Forbes/ Markets and the ABC.
Limitations:
This source is limited by the fact that it is very advanced and refers to a lot of complex economic theories and concepts and explains how they interact through globalisation and this makes it hard to understand. The source does not appear to be bias to anyone or group.
Source 4:
Origin: This primary source was created and published by Boundless.com a leading online educational website. The source was published in May of 2015 in Boston Massachusetts. Boundless is a leading online creator of textbooks, learning tools, teaching resources and educational content and currently boasts 5 million active users and 2000 universities using the service. Every published paper is checked three times by three experts in the field making the facts very reliable.
Purpose: The purpose of this source would be provide educational content about economics and Business to high school and college students and draw potential customers into their site. Their main purpose would be to show customers that their content is good quality and would try and get them to subscribe and purchase some online textbooks or sign up for some teaching courses. They also run ads on the page making money from visitors. The information on the page just shows the benefits of globalisation and this is their perspective.
Value: This source is very valuable to me as it provided me with a lot of basic benefits of globalisation and this website also explained it very well and in an easy to understand way. They covered a lot of examples and how they work and affect people and business. It also included a lot of simple and easy to understand economics information helping me to apply what is learned. The information in this source corroborates through me reading of other sources of the same information such as economicshelp.org and Investopedia.
Limitations: This source is limited by the fact that it doesn’t contain multiple perspectives to the topic of globalisation and is very one sided and doesn’t help me to understand potential implications of some of the effects of globalisation. However, the source doesn’t appear to be bias.
