India's Water Problems
I am here to inform you about the grim dangers India’s people face due to water related issues. Because of its growing population India’s natural resources are stressed trying to provide for its people resulting in people having to drink polluted water or face the fact of dehydration. India’s water problems are a huge danger to its people waterborne diseases, hygiene, water scarcity and pollution are all affecting the everyday Indian. India is located in southern Asia bordering Pakistan, Bangladesh and some more countries. India is the second most populated country in the world yet has only the 7th largest land mass. The population today is over 1.2 billion. There are 7 major rivers in India and most are polluted rivers including the Ganges river, Yamuna river and many more.
In India pollution, hygiene and waterborne diseases affect many Indians. India has some of the most polluted water in the world in some of the most polluted rivers in the world. The Yamuna and Ganges rivers are some of the most polluted in the world the Ganges has an annual sediment load of 1.6 BILLION tones compared to the 400 million of the Amazon river in Brazil. The Ganges river is a holy river for Hindus, the Ganges flows out from the Himalayas as pure holy water (look at pic) and ends up with 1.6 billion tons of sediment lurking beneath the surface. A study was done to find out what was dumped in the Ganges raw sewage, plastic, cow dung, corpses, animal carcasses, butchers offal and even human remains were all dumped in the river. One cause for the huge amounts of pollutants in the river is the high density of people with 550 people per square kilometer. Another highly polluted river is the Yamuna river flowing out from New Delhi this is also a holy river but due to the pollution a thick layer of foam has covered the top of the river (as shown in the picture). These rivers show how water pollution can affect people and the environment.

Due to all this pollution public hygiene is endangered and there is an imminent threat of waterborne diseases. India has made progress in water hygiene and supply though not enough to cope with the growing population. Over 100,000 people in India die each year due to waterborne diseases such as cholera, Diarrhea, malaria, typhoid, etc. The world bank estimates that 21% of all diseases in India are caused by unsafe water. 1600 deaths in India are caused by diarrhoea daily. It is unquestionably clear that we have to do something about this deadly problem facing Indians. The already polluted water should be cleaned using special machinery. But the most important solution is to educate the public and further prevent water pollution. The public should be educated about soil conservation, disposing of toxic chemicals properly, avoid using plastics and dispose of them properly we can also educate the public about dealing with oil in a proper manner to prevent oil leaks or spills and also clean up the beaches and waterways. We also should educate the public to take care of their local rivers, lakes and streams to ensure that they too have a passion for keeping their waterways clean and safe.
Water scarcity is another huge problem in India. India has 17% of the world’s population though only has 4% of the world’s freshwater. In desert areas people go days without water. The main causes for shortage of water are: insufficient water per person due to immense population growth, poor water quality resulting from insufficient and delayed investment in water treatment facilities and dwindling groundwater supplies due to over extraction by farmers. Because of the lack of accessibility to water the women and children have to walk miles to fetch water this often causes injuries and many times the women are taken advantage of and abused or bullied. The solutions made should target the 3 main causes of water shortage and aim to the increase water per person ratio. Solutions can include make water accessible in desert and rural areas by improving water management and placement of water taps to ensure that the population has access to clean drinkable water.
India’s water pollution and water shortage problems have to be solved. Many rivers such as the Ganges and Yamuna have to be treated for the high sediment loads and the huge amounts of pollution to ensure that the public is safe from waterborne diseases that come from high levels of pollution. The water scarcity issue is also destroying people’s lives because of the lack of water and the physical and mental strain placed on the women and children who have to fetch the water. It is clear that the people of India are suffering due to the water crisis and drastic steps have to be taken to ensure that they have access to clean drinkable water. I urge you to help clean up polluted rivers and educate the public about pollution and how to avoid it to counter the threat of waterborne diseases and pollution. I also need you to implement effective solutions to counter the problem of water scarcity. In the time I delivered this presentation/ speech 14 children died due to unsafe water. This problem is killing people every second. The people of India need our help. We have to do something!
